FIELDING POSITIONS

Choosing fielding positions

A player's fielding position should usually be based on their attributes. There's no single perfect answer, but these are good beginner rules.

Pitcher

Best attributes: Pitching, Arm.

Pitchers should usually have strong Pitching and Arm. Pitching represents skill and pitch quality. Arm helps with throwing strength.

Catcher

Best attributes: Arm, Fielding, Power or Contact.

Catcher can be a good spot for a strong hitter, especially early on. At higher levels, base stealing becomes more common, and Arm and Fielding both help control the running game. Arm gives you throw power, Fielding gives you a quicker release. Together they're how you throw out runners.

First Base

Best attributes: Power, Contact.

First base is often a good position for a pure hitter. Because first basemen don't make many long throws, Arm is less important here. Many managers use this position to get a strong bat into the lineup.

Second Base

Best attributes: Fielding, Contact, Arm, Speed.

Second base is a middle infield position, but usually more forgiving than shortstop. Second basemen benefit from being balanced and can often get away with a weaker Arm because the throw to first is shorter.

Shortstop

Best attributes: Fielding, Arm, Speed, Contact or Power.

Shortstop is one of the most important defensive positions. A good shortstop should be balanced. Enough Fielding to make plays, enough Arm to complete throws, and enough Speed to cover ground.

Third Base

Best attributes: Arm, Power or Contact, Fielding.

Third base needs a strong Arm because it has the longest infield throw to first base. Speed is less important here than at many other positions. Some managers use third base for a strong-arm hitter.

Outfield

Best attributes: Speed, Fielding, Arm.

Outfielders cover a lot of space. Good outfielders are usually fast, reliable fielders with strong enough Arms to make long throws back into the infield.
